SIPTU concerned at threat to Homebase jobs

Date Released: 17 July 2013

SIPTU has expressed concern at the threat to the jobs of workers employed by Homebase House and Garden Centre Ltd.

SIPTU Organiser, Graham Macken, said: “We are extremely concerned by the announcement yesterday (Tuesday, 16th July) that an interim examiner has been appointed to oversee the management of the 15 Homebase stores in Ireland. While SIPTU does not have a collective agreement with this company, we do represent a large number of workers in the home supplies retail sector across the country.”

He added: “The potential closure of several Homebase stores and the subsequent loss of hundreds of jobs would simply place a further burden on the State due to increased expenditure on social welfare payments. It is essential that the Government act now, by introducing an economic stimulus package  that would return life to the economy and protect jobs in the retail sector.”
