Vincent Browne to launch new edition of Sins of the Father in Liberty Hall

Date Released: 11 November 2013

Broadcaster Vincent Browne will launch a new edition of a controversial book on the Irish economic collapse, Sins of the Father, in Liberty Hall, Dublin, on Wednesday, 13th November, at 6.00 p.m.

The fully updated edition of the book by Dr. Conor McCabe, of the UCD School of Social Justice, charts the roots of the current economic crisis in Ireland to the foundation of the Free State and the dominance of a small unproductive economic and political elite.

The launch is being hosted by the Young Workers’ Network (YWN) an initiative which seeks to organise young people to effectively campaign on issues including decent work, forced emigration and cuts to services.

YWN member, Dr. Sinead Pembroke, said: “This book is an important analysis of what led to the current economic crisis in Ireland. It dismisses shallow attempts to explain away the dire state of the economy to a few wrong decisions by well-intentioned people. Rather, it charts a long history of economic mismanagement that benefited only a small section of the population and where mass emigration has been encouraged in order to maintain political control.”

SIPTU Campaigns and Equality Organiser, Ethel Buckley, said: “We believe it is important that books such as the Sins of the Father are widely read in order to provide balance to the simplistic representations of the causes of the economic crisis which dominate the media.”
