SIPTU honours Joe Duffy for his contribution to the 1913 commemorations

Date Released: 21 January 2014

Broadcaster, Joe Duffy, was presented with a specially commissioned trade union badge from 1913 to mark his contribution to the commemorations of the Dublin Lockout.

The badge, based on the design of the 1913 version issued to union members by Jim Larkin and the Irish Transport and General Workers Union, was presented to the broadcaster by SIPTU General Secretary, Joe O’Flynn, in Liberty Hall today (Tuesday 21st January).

Joe O’Flynn said that Joe Duffy had made a significant contribution during last year through his participation in several events and his coverage of the Lockout centenary on his RTE radio programme. Addressing the broadcaster and members of his family, Joe O’Flynn said:

“Your contribution to the success of the 1913 commemorations was very significant and helped to remind so many people of the sacrifices made, and the courage shown, by 20,000 workers and their families during the Lockout. You have also helped to show the relevance of that great struggle to the challenges facing workers today in their pursuit of respect and dignity in the workplace.”

In reply Joe Duffy said: “It is a great honour to receive the special 1913 badge. I was very struck by the inclusivity of the commemorations and delighted to be involved.”

He was accompanied by his wife, June, his mother Mabel, his children and other family members and friends at the presentation.
