SIPTU has called on the management of the Roscommon Leisure Centre to respond to a request for it to attend a meeting of the Labour Relations Commission (LRC) to discuss a dispute concerning workers’ wages.
SIPTU Organiser, Sandra Flanagan, said: “In July, the LRC contacted the management of Roscommon Leisure Centre inviting it to attend a hearing to discuss why workers have not been paid their increments and their claim for a pay rise.
“However, management has not responded to this request from the State industrial relations body. This failure to respond to the LRC request is unacceptable particularly when it is taken into account that the leisure centre is funded by Roscommon County Council.”
She added: “Our members work in the leisure centre as lifeguards, swimming teachers and as duty managers. They have not received a pay rise or the pay increments owed to them since 2009. Many are on very low wages; some of the part-time workers receive only just above the minimum wage.
“SIPTU representatives met management late last year to discuss the workers’ issues. Since then a number of letters have been sent by SIPTU to the company seeking it to enter negotiations to resolve this dispute. Management has not responded to these letters.”
