SIPTU says Edenderry Power planning issues must not result in compulsory redundancies

Date Released: 27 October 2015

SIPTU has stated that a decision by the High Court to overturn planning permission for the continued operation of the Bord na Móna power plant in Edenderry, Co. Offaly, must not result in compulsory redundancies.

SIPTU Organiser and Bord na Móna Group of Unions Secretary, John Regan, said: “The decision of the High Court to overturn the judgment of An Bord Pleanála to allow this plant to continue operation is concerning. However, there is a second planning application lodged and we expect it to be approved next year.

“The success of this planning application should secure all the jobs in Edenderry Power and its surrounding operations. However, if there is a rejection of this second application the position of the Bord na Móna Group of Unions remains that no compulsory redundancies will be accepted at the semi-state company.

“This was the view expressed at a Labour Court hearing last week regarding feedstock and the larger transformation agenda at Bord na Móna and nothing will change this long established position.”
