SIPTU says Labour Court recommendation on Irish Rail dispute is a positive development

Date Released: 19 November 2015

SIPTU has stated that the Labour Court recommendation issued yesterday (Tuesday, 17th November) in relation to the dispute between management and train drivers in Irish Rail is a positive development.

SIPTU Organiser, Paul Cullen, said: “The Labour Court recommendation advises that an independent assessment process be established to oversee negotiations between management and unions concerning past productivity and a reduction in the working week. This is a positive move. However, our members will decide in a ballot on its acceptance or rejection, in the coming weeks, on whether it provides enough assurance to them that the company will now seriously engage on previous commitments.”

He added: “The fact that the train drivers’ concerns are now at the centre of proposed negotiations is very positive. SIPTU members have been very critical of management throughout this dispute. The recommendation that an independent process to facilitate negotiations must be established at the company is a demonstration of how low industrial relations in Irish Rail have sunk.”
