SIPTU condemns workers treatment in sudden closure of West Clare Early Years

Date Released: 15 February 2016

SIPTU has condemned the treatment by management of workers in West Clare Early Years who were informed at the weekend by text message that the five child care centres run by the organisation in county Clare are to close with immediate effect and their jobs were lost.

SIPTU Sector Organiser, Eddie Mullins, said: “It is unacceptable that the loyal workforce in these centres were informed in such an impersonal manner that the jobs they are so committed to were gone. The full circumstances surrounding the closure of these centres, which provide an essential service to hundreds of families in the West Clare area, are not yet known.

“SIPTU representatives will be meeting with the workers affected today (Monday, 15th February) and will decide with them on the best course of action in relation to this situation. The nature of these closures, and the devastating impact it will have on local families who must now urgently seek an alternative for their children, highlights the need for a wider review of childcare services and how they can most effectively be provided, something which SIPTU has long called for.”

Approximately 53 workers are directly effected by the sudden closure and liquidation of West Clare Early Years including several SIPTU members.
