SIPTU to attend WRC on staffing shortages in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital

Date Released: 01 July 2016

SIPTU representatives will attend the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) on Monday (4th July) to discuss the long-running dispute concerning shortages in nursing staff in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, County Louth

SIPTU Organiser, John McCamley, said: “The meeting scheduled for Monday follows local discussions between workers’ representatives and management in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital at which there was agreement to re-engage at the WRC.

“Our members have received assurances that a number of their key demands will be addressed. However, they believe that there is still much to be discussed and agreed before this dispute can be resolved.

“A key element is reaching agreement on an emergency plan to deal with staff shortages at the hospital. Such a plan must assess the clinical and safety risks on each of the wards on a day by day basis. Members have also raised concerns regarding the recruitment and retention of staff, governance structures on the wards as well as the dependency on agency staff and overtime to fill vacancies”.

He added: “SIPTU members welcome the chance to deal with these issues. However, they are seeking concrete solutions from management which will enable a final resolution to this dispute.”
