SIPTU members in CIT Student Services CLG to conduct one day work stoppage

Date Released: 30 November 2016

SIPTU members employed by Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) Student Services CLG will implement a work stoppage and place pickets on entrances to the institute on Wednesday, 7th December, from 7.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m.

The industrial action results from a dispute relating to rates of pay for staff employed by the company, which was set up and is run by CIT management to deliver services including catering and shops in the institution.

SIPTU Organiser, Bill Mulcahy, said: “The 45 workers employed by the company are on very low rates of pay of between approximately €9 to €11 per hour. This is despite many of the workers having over 20 years of service. Workers have not received a pay raise for nine years and new entrants have been forced to accept reduced wages and conditions of employment.

“SIPTU representatives are seeking to enter into discussions with management in order to reach an agreement containing pay rises and secure conditions of employment for staff. Management is refusing to meet with union representatives to discuss any of these matters unless it is agreed, in advance, that cuts to employees’ entitlements can be discussed. Our members are totally opposed to any discussion on further cuts to their earnings.”

He added: “Due to the intransigence shown by management our members have been left with no option other than beginning a campaign of industrial action.”
