SIPTU representatives attend Oireachtas and Labour Court to discuss Bus Éireann

Date Released: 24 January 2017

SIPTU representatives today (Tuesday, 24th January) attended meetings of the Oireachtas Transport Committee and Labour Court to discuss the situation at Bus Éireann following threats by management to implement massive cut backs at the public transport company.

SIPTU Sector Organiser, Willie Noone, said: “SIPTU representatives had a constructive engagement with TDs and Senators at the Oireachtas Transport Committee concerning Bus Éireann. It is hoped that following the discussions the elected representatives will have a much clearer idea of the true position of the company, its workers and the services it is providing.”

He added: “Just prior to our arrival at the Oireachtas Committee we received a request to attend the Labour Court which we attended late this afternoon. However, our attendance at the Labour Court did not involve any engagement with the proposals concerning the company that have been released by the management of Bus Éireann. Rather, SIPTU representatives engaged with the Labour Court to assist its investigation into why the company has requested its intervention at this stage.

“The process concluded with all parties agreeing there was no benefit in re-engaging on the claim that was before the Labour Court hearing on 6th December 2016.”
