SIPTU members in CIT Student Services CLG to conduct one-day work stoppage

Date Released: 27 February 2017

SIPTU members employed by Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) Student Services CLG will implement a work stoppage and place pickets on entrances to the Institute on Thursday, 2nd March, from 7.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m.

The industrial action results from a dispute relating to rates of pay for staff employed by the company, which was set up and is run by CIT management, to deliver services including catering and shops in the Institute. The dispute has already resulted in a one-day work stoppage on Wednesday, 7th December, 2016.

SIPTU Organiser, Bill Mulcahy, said: “The 45 workers employed by the company are on very low rates of pay of between approximately €9 to €11 per hour. This is despite many of the workers having over 20 years of service. Workers have not received a pay rise for ten years and new entrants have been forced to accept reduced wages and conditions of employment.

“Following the one-day work stoppage in December 2016, SIPTU representatives met with management to discuss the need for pay rises and secure conditions of employment for staff. These discussions came to an end following a wholly inadequate pay offer from management.”

He added: “Due to the intransigence shown by management our members have been left with no option other than to continue their campaign of industrial action. They regret any disruption which results but believe that no other course of action has been left open to them to effectively pursue their legitimate claim.”
