Rally in support of Tim Hastings Volkswagen workers in Westport tomorrow

Date Released: 03 March 2017

SIPTU is calling upon supporters of the Tim Hastings Volkswagen workers, who have been on strike since early February, to come out in large numbers for a major rally in Westport, County Mayo, tomorrow (Saturday, 4th March).

SIPTU Sector Organiser, Teresa Hannick, said: “Our members have been on strike at Tim Hastings Volkswagen since 3rd February in a dispute concerning the non-payment of redundancy entitlements and a refusal by management to respect a Labour Court recommendation.

“Tomorrow, the supporters of the workers from across the West of Ireland and beyond will assemble at the NCT Centre at Monamore in Westport at 1.00 p.m. From there they will march to the Octagon in Westport where a rally will be held. We are asking the local community to come out to show their support for the striking workers. The rally is a family friendly event and will include speeches and music.”

SIPTU Organiser, Ashling Dunne, said: “The workers have received massive support from the local community and SIPTU members across the country. Today (Friday, 3rd March) the workers also received support from their colleagues in Europe with trade unionists attending a meeting of the work councils of Volkswagen and Audi retailers in Frankfurt in Germany sending a message of solidarity.

“The SIPTU members and their supporters will be united in the demand that the management of Tim Hastings Volkswagen agrees to implement the full terms of a Labour Court recommendation concerning three employees who were made redundant last year. These workers have received no redundancy payments, either statutory or ex-gratia.”
