Cleaners in De La Salle College in Waterford to conduct work stoppages

Date Released: 26 April 2018

SIPTU members employed as cleaners in De La Salle College, Newtown Road Lower, Waterford City, have voted to conduct three one-day work stoppages as part of a campaign of industrial action aimed at halting an attempt to outsource their work at the school.

SIPTU Organiser, Bill Mulcahy, said: “The cleaners will be conducting industrial action in the form of three one-day work stoppages during May. The dates of these stoppages will be finalised in the coming days and the workers will place pickets on the entrances to the school on these dates. The ten cleaners involved in this action deeply regret any inconvenience which will be caused to pupils and staff on these days. However, they have been left with no alternative other than to undertake a campaign of industrial action.”

He added: “The school’s board of management, the direct employers of the cleaners, has shown complete intransigence in its decision to outsource these workers’ jobs to an external contractor. This is an unacceptable situation and is completely opposed by the cleaning staff.

“SIPTU representatives are available at any time to discuss this dispute with management and find a solution which must include the continuation of the cleaning staff as direct employees of the school.”
