CE Supervisors welcome Dáil motion calling for establishment of pension scheme

Date Released: 26 April 2018

Community Employment (CE) Supervisors have welcomed the passing of a motion in the Dáil, this afternoon (Thursday, 26thApril) which calls on the Government to implement a Labour Court recommendation to provide them with a pension scheme.

SIPTU Sector Organiser, Eddie Mullins, said: “Our members are very grateful for the support this motion received from all the groups in the Dáil apart from Fine Gael and the Independent Alliance. The motion simply calls on the Government to respect a long-standing Labour Court recommendation and establish an adequate pension scheme for this group of workers.

“CE Supervisors play an invaluable and essential role in the delivery of programmes and schemes which are crucial to the wellbeing of communities throughout the country. It is completely unacceptable that these workers do not have a pension to look forward to after, in many cases, decades of work within their communities.

“It has been nearly three years since a commitment was given that this outstanding Labour Court recommendation would be resolved. Since then, we have had a change of government and no real action on the issue. Our members fully expect the Government to accept the will of Dáil Eireann and act on this Labour Court recommendation immediately.”

He added: “The patience of our members concerning the establishment of an adequate pension scheme is wearing very thin. It will be completely unacceptable to them if the two Ministers who will be directly involved in resolving this situation, the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection, Regina Doherty, and Minister for Finance and Public Expenditure and Reform, Paschal Donohoe, continue to ignore it.”
