SIPTU has called on the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport to provide clear commitments that proposed primary legislation governing the establishment of a new company, encompassing Shannon Airport Authority (SAA), Shannon Development and Shannon Heritage, will protect workers' existing pay, terms and conditions of employment in the three entities into the future. SIPTU Organiser, Tony Carroll, said: “Our members at Shannon Airport have balloted overwhelmingly for strike action in relation to their objective to secure guarantees on their pay, terms and conditions of employment, including the maintenance of existing collective agreements with the employer into the future.” “While we accept assurances contained in a letter from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport to the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, on foot of a meeting with Minister Leo Varadkar, that no redundancies will be implemented by the SAA for the first six months of 2013, this fails to adequately address the concerns of our members.” “Our members at Shannon Airport are seeking clear assurances from the Department that primary legislation governing the new entity which is to be formed by the merger of Shannon Development, Shannon Heritage and the SAA will include the protection of workers’ existing pay, terms and conditions of employment.” Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar, has indicated he intends to introduce the primary legislation governing the operation of the new merged entity to the Dáil during the first six months of 2013.
