“Prior to joining the Local Authority, I worked for six years with a Civil Engineering Contractor. None of the staff were represented by a Union at this time. Our employer was very fair, and nobody saw the need to engage with a Union. As a result, I did not join the Union on joining the Local Authority. It was the industrial action of 2009 that made me rethink the value of Union membership and the need for collective strength when facing adversity. I realised that it was no longer sufficient to rely on the good nature of the employer in challenging times.

“Since joining LAPO in 2009 and later its Executive Committee, my focus has been on supporting fellow members, ensuring that their voices are clearly heard and resonate with our employers to protect, and wherever possible enhance, our terms, conditions and pay.

“A strong Local Authority sector requires dedicated Professional Officers with influence on senior management to guide us forward. As Chair of the LAPO Executive Committee, I am working with my fellow Reps to work as a collective to protect and enhance the critical roles and career paths of our members, now, and into the future.”
