SIPTU members employed by Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) Student Services CLG implemented a work stoppage and place pickets on entrances to the institute on Wednesday, 7th December. The industrial action resulted from a dispute relating to rates of pay for staff employed by the company, which was set up and is run by CIT management to deliver services including catering and shops in the institution. SIPTU Organiser, Bill Mulcahy, said: “The 45 workers employed by the company are on very low rates of pay of between approximately €9 to €11 per hour. Workers have not received a pay raise for ten years and new entrants have been forced to accept reduced wages and conditions of employment. “Management is refusing to meet with union representatives to discuss any of these matters unless it is agreed, in advance, that cuts to employees’ entitlements can be discussed. Our members are totally opposed to any discussion on further cuts to their earnings.”
