South Dublin County Councillors voted unanimously last night (Monday, 14th July) to support a motion calling on locked out Greyhound Recycling and Recovery workers to be allowed return to their jobs on their existing terms and conditions while talks aimed at resolving the dispute take place. The motion also directed the South Dublin County Manager “to undertake a review of the licensing and delivery of waste collection services”.The motion stated that this “review should look at employment practices among the licensed service providers with particular regard to levels of pay, pension and sick pay provision as well as procedures for the conduct of industrial relations and collective bargaining.”It “should also consider whether the interests of the citizens in the county would be best served by the return of this strategic service into the public sector.”Sinn Féin Clondalkin councillor, Eoin Ó Broin, who proposed the motion, said: “The passing of this motion by the Council sends a clear signal to Greyhound management that what they are doing is wrong. It is also a clear statement of intent that the Council intends to increase our scrutiny of private waste operators in the County.” He added: “There is now a compelling case for the return of this service to the public sector so that it can be delivered in a responsible and sustainable way.”
