Representatives of SIPTU and the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) have expressed condolences to the family of the docker and union member, Kevin McGeough, who was buried in Rostrevor, county Down, this morning (22nd July). Kevin (59), who was married with three adult children, was killed in a workplace accident in Warrenpoint Port on Thursday (18th July).ITF Inspector for Ireland, Michael Whelan, said: “I expressed sincere condolences, on behalf of his SIPTU colleagues to Kevin’s family, friends and work mates at his funeral today. Kevin was a respected figure in his local community which has been deeply saddened by his untimely death while carrying out his job on the docks. “The exact circumstances surrounding this tragedy are currently being investigated and it is to be hoped that this will provide information which will prevent any similar tragedy.”SIPTU Ports, Docks and Harbour Organiser, Jerry Brennan, said: “This tragedy is further confirmation that our ports and docks can be very dangerous working environments with too many deaths of seafarers and dock workers occurring over recent months and years. SIPTU and the ITF are currently involved in a nationwide campaign to ensure that every measure possible is introduced and enforced to safeguard workers involved in the vital work carried out in our docks and ports. Everything must be done to prevent more such tragedies.”
