SIPTU has called for funds to be made available immediately to upgrade and increase staff numbers at the St Patrick’s Nursing Home, Carrick-on-Shannon, county Leitrim. SIPTU Organiser, Sandra Flanagan, said: “SIPTU members who work at the facility are calling for an immediate investment by the HSE in capital works, increasing staff numbers and bringing forward plans, currently under consideration, for a new 100-bed unit. We believe these actions must be undertaken in order to bring the home up to the standards required by Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) and deserved by residents and staff.” Flanagan added: “A particularly unfortunate outcome from a HIQA report which was released earlier this month and found failings with the unit has been the abuse on social media that some members of staff have endured. This is totally unacceptable in light of the report finding that there were no faults with the standard of conduct of the workers at the facility.” “Indeed, the HIQA report found that despite the failings uncovered at the facility, in terms of its infrastructure and staff numbers, the residents were happy due to the high standard of staff care they received.
