SIPTU has welcomed today's announcement by the Living Wage Technical Group (LWTG) that its calculation of the Living Wage for Ireland has risen to €14.80. This new figure comes in response to the skyrocketing cost of living and calls for urgent government intervention. SIPTU Head of Strategic Organising, Darragh O’Connor, said: "This increase in the Living Wage means that vast swathes of Irish society will be earning below a minimum standard of living. That is unacceptable and unsustainable. The Government must urgently address living costs, in particular those associated with housing and energy. "SIPTU supports the Government's commitment to increase the minimum wage to 60% of median earnings by 2026. However, unless the government tackles the profit-driven rise in inflation, a Living Wage will remain little more than an aspiration."
