SIPTU Transport, Energy, Aviation and Construction Division Organiser, Adrian Kane, has said that new rail links proposed by transport minister, Eamon Ryan, must be rolled out much more rapidly than in the timescale envisaged. Adrian Kane said: “This proposal is for one of the most significant investments in rail infrastructure in the history of the State. However, the lengthy time scale for rolling out the project is unacceptable, particularly in light of the warnings contained in the annual review from the Climate Change Advisory Council concerning the likely failure of the Government to reach its carbon reduction targets. The new and faster rail links must be rolled out much more rapidly than envisaged.” SIPTU Transport Sector Organiser, John Murphy said: “We need to ensure that this project is given maximum priority to ensure that clean, environmentally friendly, transport options are available for all citizens on the island. This can only encourage people to make the switch from private transport options and help Ireland meet its climate targets. SIPTU members have consistently campaigned for investment in public transport as the best means of achieving a world class, environmentally sound, transport system for all.”
