SIPTU representatives have today (Thursday, 24th August) called on the Tánaiste, Micheál Martin, to intervene to protect jobs and childcare services at risk from the sudden closure of the Before 5 Family Centre in Churchfield, Cork. The preschool, which had spaces for up to 100 children, was a vital resource and closed without notice on Wednesday. SIPTU Organiser, Peter O’Brien, said: “Our members are absolutely outraged at developments in Before 5 Family Centre in Cork. Despite their best efforts to engage with management to find a workable solution, they were left high and dry. “Young children who were due to start their early years education on Monday have had the rug pulled from under them, leaving our members and the community they serve distressed and let down.  “The Tánaiste needs step in now to use his office to reverse this abhorrent decision. Otherwise, there will be a lasting and severe impact on families, children and the local community.”
