SIPTU General Secretary, Joe O’Flynn, has expressed his deep regret at the news of the death of former ITGWU and SIPTU president, John Carroll. “On behalf of the officers and members of SIPTU, I wish to express my deep regret at the news that our former General President, John Carroll, has died.  John was a giant in the trade union movement and a household name and was hugely instrumental in bringing together the ITGWU and the Federated Workers Union of Ireland to form SIPTU in 1990. “As Vice-President and then General President of the ITGWU he played a huge role in securing decent rates of pay and conditions of work for tens of thousands of workers. He will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends in the trade union movement, ” Joe O’Flynn said. John Carroll served as Vice-President of the ITGWU between 1969 and 1981 and as General P resident between 1981 and 1989. He served as Joint General President of SIPTU on its formation in early 1990.
