SIPTU members employed as cleaners in Sligo Institute of Technology (IT) have voted unanimously to undertake a 48-hour work stoppage which will commence on Monday, 30th September at 8.00 a.m. in a dispute concerning a major reduction in their working hours. SIPTU Organiser, Declan Ferry, said: “Our members are taking this action due to a dispute which results from the transfer of their work from one private contract cleaning company to another, Allpro Services.“Under the conditions of the Transfer of Undertakings Protection of Employment (TUPE) legalisation our members’ terms and conditions should have remained the same. However, the workers were informed last month that the time for them to carry out their work was being reduced by 200 hours per week. This change was implemented without consultation with, or the agreement of, our members.”He added: “Our members dispute is directly with Allpro Services. The management of Sligo IT has claimed that it has no role to play in resolving this dispute and has refused to meet with SIPTU representatives. This is despite the management of Sligo IT having drawn up the new cleaning contract tender which includes a major reduction in working hours, which Allpro Services is currently implementing.“We believe that the involvement of the management of Sligo IT is integral to a resolution of this dispute and renew our request to meet with it to discuss the situation.”
