SIPTU members at the Leo Pharma pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in Kimmage, Dublin 12, began a campaign of industrial action this morning (Monday, 17th August) at 6.00 a.m. following an attempt by management to sack five workers in breach of a collective agreement. SIPTU Organiser, Jim Fuery, said: “This dispute relates to the failure of the multinational company to respect the terms of a collective agreement. This collective agreement ensures our members’ permanency of employment after two years’ service with the company. Recently, five SIPTU members have had their employment terminated by the company despite having more than two years’ service. “This move not only breached the collective agreement but showed a shocking level of disregard for five people who had been deemed essential workers and continued to work throughout the pandemic. These young workers were told they had lost their careers last month after such dedicated service. “In response, their fellow SIPTU members in Leo Pharma voted in a ballot to take industrial action in support of the five members who lost their jobs in a manner which breached the collective agreement and a management refusal to accept its terms going forward. “The industrial action which began today consists of two-hour rolling work stoppages, an overtime ban and non-cooperation with changes to work practices. This initial period of industrial action will continue for two weeks until 6.00 a.m. on Monday 31st August.” He added: “SIPTU members in Leo Pharma have been left with no option other than to take this industrial action in support of their fellow members and to protect their collective agreements. They are calling on management to ends it intransigence and respect long established agreements.”
