SIPTU members have served notice today (Thursday, 2nd November) of industrial action involving five work stoppages at the AbbVie Ltd Plant in the IDA Industrial Estate, Carrigtwohill, county Cork. The industrial action involves three 36-hour work stoppages commencing at 7.00 a.m. on Tuesday, 14th November, at 7.00 p.m. on Wednesday, 22nd November and at 7.00 p.m. on Wednesday, 29th November. Also scheduled is a 33-hour work stoppage commencing at 7.00 p.m. on Thursday, 7th December, and a 48-hour work stoppage at 7.00 a.m. on Monday, 11th December. Pickets will be placed on the plant for the duration of each work stoppage.SIPTU Sector Organiser, Alan O’Leary, said: “The union has over many years sought direct talks with the management in AbbVie to resolve our members issues. There have also been a number of Labour Court recommendations in favour of the workers’ right to be represented by their union. However, AbbVie management has to-date refused to implement any of these recommendations.“The workers in AbbVie have demonstrated extraordinary patience with the company over many years. The failure of management to implement Labour Court recommendations is completely unacceptable behaviour by a multi-national corporation and has left our members with no option but to pursue a campaign of industrial action.”He added: “SIPTU represents thousands of workers employed in the Pharmaceutical Chemical and Medical Devices Sector. All other major multi-national corporations in this sector, including Pfizer, Novartis, Merck, Roche, Janssen, GSK and Abbott fully engage with the dispute resolution mechanisms of the State such as the Workplace Relations Commission, Adjudicator Services and the Labour Court. In refusing to engage with the union through these conciliation services management in AbbVie is acting outside the norm.“SIPTU representatives remain available to engage with the company on the issues in dispute.”
