Following a postal ballot of members, an agreement has been reached today (Wednesday, August 23rd) between Altrad Services (Ireland) and SIPTU representatives which brings forward improvements in pay for construction sector workers. According to the agreement, the scheduled increase of hourly pay rates of 1.9% due to take effect from 15th September 2023 will be brought forward to take effect from 15th July 2023. The scheduled increase of 3.5% in hourly rates of pay due to take effect from 5th August 2024 will also be brought forward to take effect from 16th September 2023. SIPTU Organiser, Rory Hawkins, said: "While we are satisfied that the SEO rates of pay bring stability to the construction sector, we see them as minimum rates whereas some employers see them as a limit."However, we acknowledge the efforts made by the negotiating team of Altrad services, working within the parameters, to bring this proposal to our members. We hope it will assist when we are trying to alleviate the pressures felt by our members due to the ongoing cost-of-living inflationary crisis."I would like to acknowledge and thank our shop stewards in Altrad for their efforts throughout the negotiations." SIPTU Construction Sector Organiser, John Regan, said: "This agreement demonstrates that some industry employers are aware of the importance of maintaining employee living standards in these challenging times. Engaging locally with SIPTU officials is the way to ensure that the correct balance is achieved between tackling inflation and managing the ever-increasing cost of living."
