SIPTU representatives in Midlands Regional Hospital, Tullamore, County Offaly, have today (Thursday, 24th May) cautiously welcomed confirmation from hospital management that it has been given approval to recruit more staff to relieve some of the pressure on existing staff. SIPTU Organiser, John Hubbard, said: “SIPTU members reluctantly held a protest at the hospital at lunchtime today to highlight their valid concerns over safe staffing levels. The announcement from management proves that when workers stick together management are forced to take action. While this announcement is welcome it still falls short of reaching the levels of staff appropriate to deal with the workloads our members are currently facing.” He added: “It is our intention to meet with management next Tuesday (29th May) to discuss the recruitment of these additional staff and ensure a plan is in place to secure safe staffing levels in the hospital into the future.”
