SIPTU Aviation Sector Organiser, Neil McGowan, said: “Workers in the aviation industry across the country have suffered a huge loss of employment and a devastating decrease in working hours and earnings due to the collapse in passenger numbers as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. “Budget 2021 does little to support these workers and their families. The only commitment in the budget was for an unspecified €10 million for Cork and Shannon airports which will only scratch the surface of what is required to ensure their future. Many thousands of families depend on the industry for their livelihoods and there is little or no support for workers in the airports, airlines or the other companies that make up the industry. “Our members are seeking an increase in the wage subsidy payment for workers in Aviation given the crippling impact of travel restrictions.” SIPTU Divisional Organiser, Karan O’Loughlin said: ”Budget 2021 was a missed opportunity for the Government to support these workers and ensure there is a functioning aviation industry which can play its part in Ireland’s post-Covid recovery.”
