A ‘trade union day’ will take place in NUI Galway on Wednesday, 23rd September, focusing on discrimination and precarious employment at the university. The day will highlight how unions at NUI Galway are spearheading the fight against discrimination, harassment, bullying, job insecurity, outsourcing and high and unhealthy workloads. The ultimate aim of the campaign is to give dignity back to people working and learning at NUI Galway with the consequential benefit of higher educational standards.Among the events of the day is a lunchtime meeting on gender and other areas of discrimination. This will take place in the Careers Seminar Room, Arts/Science Building at 1.00 p.m.Later, in the Town Hall Theatre studio, a public meeting at 7.30 p.m. will address the subject of precarious employment and discrimination at the university with speakers from SIPTU, IFUT and Third Level Workplace Watch.SIPTU Organiser, Noel Maguire, said: “Institutional discrimination and unfair treatment occur across all grades of staff, men as well as women, as a daily feature of working life at NUI Galway.” He added: “While this culture is endemic, it is not inevitable; staff, students and the wider public can use their united will to make this blight on Galway’s reputation a thing of the past. Many more staff are joining SIPTU to become part of our equality campaign on campus. We want to make sure that everyone knows that they can help to make this campaign work.”
