SIPTU has requested an immediate meeting with the management of Covidien following the announcement today (Monday, 16th June) that the medical device manufacturer has agreed to be acquired by Medtronic. SIPTU Organiser, Frank Jones, said: “Our members in both Covidien and Medtronic are concerned as to the implications that this move may have on their workplaces."He added: “SIPTU has requested an urgent meeting with management in the Covidien manufacturing plants in Tullamore and Athlone. At this meeting union representatives will seek further information on what the acquisition by Medtronic will entail and assurances concerning the terms and conditions of employment of our members.”Medtronic currently operates a major medical devices manufacturing plant in Co. Galway.
