SIPTU is seeking an urgent meeting with the new owner of Clerys Department Store, Dublin, following confirmation today (Friday, 12th June) that the company has been bought by the real estate firm, Natrium. SIPTU Organiser, Robert Purfield, said: “Our members are surprised at the sudden announcement by Gordon Brothers Europe of the sale of Clerys Department Store today. While it had indicated to us a review of the business was ongoing the sale has come out of the blue and is of great concern to our members, many of whom have given a lifetime of service to the store.”He added: “At this stage we are urgently seeking a meeting with the new owner to clarify what impact the sale will have on our members. There has been mounting speculation surrounding the future of the historic store in recent months and it is essential that the new owner confirms to the workers as soon as possible what are its intentions.”
