The proposal by the National Transport Authority (NTA) to put out to tender 10% of Bus Eireann routes and 100% of Waterford city services by 2016 will be the subject of a public meeting which will take place at 7.30 p.m. in the Tower Hotel in Waterford on Thursday 15th May. SIPTU is calling on all politicians in the Waterford area and members of the public to attend this meeting so that the real consequences of this decision can be aired. “The fact that the viability of the Bus Eireann garage in the city is now under threat alongside the fact that workers have been told that their pensions and jobs are not protected is a further blow to the economic revival of the south east region,” SIPTU Organiser, Willie Noone, said. “The concerns of workers and the public need to be heard regarding the NTA decision to select Waterford as the only city to have 100% of its bus services privatised. There is also concern that there is no provision for an alternative service in the event that any company that successfully tenders fails to honour its contractual commitments,” he added.
