SIPTU representatives have expressed support for an announcement, today (Tuesday, 30th May), by pharmaceutical multinational Merck Sharp Dohme (MSD) that it intends to create 330 new jobs in its plants in Brinny, County Cork, Ballydine, County Tipperary and Carlow, County Carlow. SIPTU Sector Organiser, Alan O’Leary, said: “The announcement by MSD that it intends to create 330 additional jobs and invest approximately €250 million over the next few years is very welcome news. It is understood that 210 new jobs are to be created at the Brinny plant and 140 jobs within the company’s other two plants in Ballydine and Carlow. The union is assured that these new jobs will be high quality posts in a range of positions, such as general operator and laboratory analyst, throughout the MSD sites.“SIPTU representatives have just concluded a 'Stability and Pay' agreement with the management at the Brinny plant so are confident that the new roles will be well paid quality positions which are the type of jobs that the economy badly needs. When one high quality manufacturing position is created then one or possibly even two indirect jobs are also created to support the activity.”He added: “We absolutely agree with the management view that this jobs announcement is a vote of confidence in their high calibre workforce and it is a very welcome sign of the commitment by MSD to invest in the future of its sites in Ireland.”
