A new co-operation agreement has been reached today between DCU, SIPTU and IFUT on collective representational rights on behalf of the members of both unions in the university. The University recognises the positive role played by trade unions within the workplace and this agreement builds further on the existing positive industrial relations climate in DCU between SIPTU and IFUT. Under the agreement, the two unions will each nominate members to a Joint Union Forum. The Forum will meet on a regular basis during the academic year to identify and deal collectively with issues affecting members. Welcoming the agreement, Joan Donegan, General Secretary of IFUT, said: “This marks a further major step forward in co-operative working in the university. As we jointly seek to advance the status of the university, staff and students in the context of the impact of Covid-19, this agreement will enable a continued positive method of work, joint initiatives and resolution of any issues arising,” she said. Adrian Kane, SIPTU Public Administration Division Organiser, said: “The agreement builds on the already positive and collaborative relationship between both unions. The challenges facing the trade union movement in third level education are significant with large numbers of employees lacking any type of security of employment. Both unions have vowed to work together in intensifying our efforts to organise workers across the third level sector.”
