The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has launched a new initiative, ‘Stronger Together: Anti-Racism Workplaces and Trade Unions Project’ aimed at combating racism and championing the contributions of migrant workers to society in Ireland.
This multi-pronged approach includes giving union representatives the skills and tools to effectively challenge racism in workplaces by integrating anti-racism policies into collective bargaining strategies.
SIPTU Migrant Support Worker Network activists Don Saramantunga and Yvonne Mefor participated in a leadership training programme and gave their first hand experiences of workers’ facing racism. A key component of the training is to empower union members by fostering a culture of participation by migrant workers within the structures of trade unions.
A conference will be held on 10th September in Dublin that will share the project’s findings and best practices.
Members who wish to attend the ICTU-organised conference should speak to their SIPTU Organiser.
